Consumers continue to ask us about fiberglass in mattresses. We have important information to share.

Foam producers do not use fiberglass to make the types of foam we use. We use only foam that is certified through the CertiPUR-US® program. However, sometimes there may be fiberglass in your mattress cover or in a fabric “sock” that is pulled over the foam core before the cover is put on — in what is referred to as a barrier fabric.

These barrier fabrics are designed to meet government flammability standards. This is a perfectly legitimate practice. But the fiberglass must stay safely contained inside the mattress.

For that reason, do not remove the cover of a mattress without first reading product care instructions carefully, consulting the manufacturer’s website, or calling their customer service department.

Of course, some mattresses are designed with a cover that can be removed without creating a problem, but just because you see a zipper, do not assume the cover is removable.

Sometimes the zipper is there only for easy assembly at the factory and not for the consumer to use. In these cases, unzipping the cover could be like opening Pandora’s Box. You could release glass fibers into the air or onto you, which is not going to be fun (or even possible) to clean up or put back.

That’s why it’s a good idea to purchase a separate mattress pad or protector to keep on top of your mattress and under your sheets to protect the surface from spills and stains.

There are many ways to manage SAD. You can try a broad range of mental health and wellness tools for self-care or seek help from a doctor. Explore the methods that work best for your symptoms and lifestyle.

Here are some common options for treating seasonal depression:

Practice Good Sleep Hygiene
A healthy sleep schedule is important for everyone’s mental health. Some easy ways to change your sleep routine in the winter include:

• Going to bed earlier, so you’re awake during fewer nighttime hours. A warm bath, gentle stretching, or a soothing cup of tea before bed can help.
• Napping helps with stress, but don’t do it too close to bedtime or for too long at a time. Aim for 20 to 30 minutes around midday or halfway between when you wake up in the morning and go to bed at night.
• Reducing how much caffeine you drink 4 to 6 hours before bedtime.
• Avoid screen time in bed, whether with your computer, phone, tablet, or television. If you need something to focus your mind on, try reading a book, doing a crossword puzzle by hand, or meditating.
To help manage the symptoms of SAD, try getting extra sunlight whenever you can. Some easy options are:
• Stepping outside a few times a day
• Taking a brisk walk on your lunch break
• Rearranging furniture or trimming trees to allow more sun into your home

Break a sweat
Exercise, in general, can ease symptoms, and it doesn’t have to be strenuous. Here are some workouts that can help with SAD:

• Daily walks to maximize sun exposure
• Strength training to release endorphins
• Yoga relieves stress, builds strength, and improves flexibility

Talk to your doctor
In some cases, a doctor may recommend clinical treatments for seasonal affective disorder, like:

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT): A behavior-based approach to treating depression and other conditions. Some smartphone apps, like myStrength, have CBT-based programs to help users manage depression.
Antidepressants: Medications, like selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs).
Vitamin D: Dietary supplements to boost your vitamin intake.
Light therapy: A treatment using bright light boxes for 20 to 60 minutes each day to help reset your internal clock.
If your symptoms disrupt your life, talk to your doctor about what care options might be best for you.

With so many sheets to choose from, finding the right ones can be tough.

Consider these factors when choosing sheets:

1. Thread count
2. Pocket depth
3. Resistance to pilling, shrinking, and stains
4. Moisture wicking

Remember, happiness stems from fresh sheets. 😉
